data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Healthcare organizations across Canada have rapidly embraced digital technologies to improve patient care, communication, and operational efficiency (Harish, V., Ackery, A., Grant, K., Jamieson, T., &amp; Mehta, S., 2023). As clinicians, nurses, administrative staff, contractors, and patients increasingly rely on more mobile access to healthcare services, many healthcare organizations have adopted Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) programs to support flexibility and reduce hardware costs.<\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However, healthcare remains one of the most targeted sectors for cyberattacks (Standards Council of Canada, 2025). In Canada, the healthcare sector accounted for 48% of all reported data breaches in 2019 and represented 11.9% of cyberattacks in 2024, making it one of the country&#8217;s most frequently targeted industries (PricewaterhouseCoopers Canada (PwC), 2024).\u00a0<\/span>Across the sector, organizations face an average of 293 cyberattacks annually, while 64% report experiencing a data breach and 66% identify ransomware as their top cybersecurity concern <span data-contrast=\"auto\">(CDW Canada, 2026).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The consequences of these cyberattacks go beyond financial losses. Cybersecurity incidents can disrupt patient care, delay treatments, compromise sensitive health information, and erode public trust. Increased Risk of Data Breaches<\/h3><p>Personal devices often lack the same security protections as organizationally managed devices. Lost, stolen, shared, or compromised devices can expose sensitive patient information, while unsecured Wi-Fi, outdated software, and unauthorized applications increase breach risks (Canadian Centre for Cyber Security, 2020).<\/p><h3>2. Limited Visibility &amp; Control<\/h3><p>Many healthcare IT teams lack visibility into device configurations, installed applications, operating system updates, and vulnerabilities. Recent research found that 42.7% of healthcare organizations report gaps in visibility and analytics, making it more difficult to identify threats and respond quickly to security incidents (CDW Canada, 2026). Without centralized oversight, maintaining consistent security standards becomes difficult.<\/p><h3>3. Identity &amp; Access Management Challenges<\/h3><p>Personal devices may not enforce strong passwords, multi-factor authentication (MFA), or biometric controls, increasing the risk of unauthorized access to clinical systems and patient records. This remains a significant concern as 48.5% of healthcare organizations identify, identity and access management as their largest Zero Trust weakness (CDW Canada, 2026). Additionally, challenges can also include incompatibility between application and different device operating systems (i.e. IOS vs. Android), which can affect functionality, security controls and the user experience. Healthcare organizations can also face limitations on charging infrastructure, greater susceptibility of personal devices being lost or stolen, increasing the risk of data exposure, unauthorized access and disruption to healthcare service delivery.<\/p><h3>4. Greater Exposure to Phishing &amp; Social Engineering<\/h3><p>Cybercriminals routinely target healthcare workers through malicious emails, text messages, credential-harvesting, smishing, vishing and more. Unmanaged devices can create additional opportunities for attackers to gain access to sensitive systems. Research indicates that 53.4% of healthcare organizations consider social engineering a leading cybersecurity threat (CDW Canada, 2026). By implementing an integrated bedside solution, providers can reduce dependence on unmanaged personal devices, deliver trusted information through a secure hospital-managed platform, and minimize exposure to phishing and social engineering attacks.<\/p><h3>5. Compliance &amp; Privacy Risks<\/h3><p>Research cited in the Technology Innovation Management Review found that 81% of healthcare organizations store sensitive patient data on mobile devices, 49% provide no security protection for that data, and 71% of organizations that permit BYOD have no formal BYOD policies in place (Marshall, S., 2014). Compliance with strict privacy regulations governing personal health information is essential for all healthcare providers. Inconsistent security controls across personal devices increase the risk of privacy breaches, regulatory penalties, legal liabilities, and reputational damage.<\/p><h3>6. Shadow IT &amp; Unauthorized Applications<\/h3><p>Unapproved messaging apps, file-sharing platforms, and cloud storage services may store or transmit patient data outside approved environments, creating security blind spots and increasing the risk of data leakage (ClearDATA, 2019).<\/p><h3>7. Device Loss, Theft &amp; Incident Response Challenges<\/h3><p>Investigating employee-owned devices can present legal and operational barriers (Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, 2025). Organizations often have limited authority to inspect, isolate, or remotely wipe personal devices during a cybersecurity incident (Amplify Care, 2025).<\/p><h3>8. Patient Experience &amp; Equity Concerns<\/h3><p>Not all patients have access to suitable devices, reliable internet connectivity, or the digital literacy required to use healthcare applications effectively (Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, 2025). Seniors, patients with disabilities, long-stay patients, and vulnerable populations may experience barriers when services rely heavily on personal devices (World Health Organization, 2025).<\/p><h3>9. Increased IT, Security &amp; Governance Requirements<\/h3><p>Successful BYOD programs require secure network infrastructure, cybersecurity monitoring, policy enforcement, user training, device management, and ongoing support often offsetting perceived hardware cost savings (Ontario Health, 2026) &amp; (Canadian Centre for Cyber Security, 2022). Furthermore, BYOD initiatives can increase operational responsibilities for frontline healthcare workers. Staff personnel may be expected to assist patients and loved ones with connecting personal devices to hospital Wi\u2011Fi networks, downloading and configuring hospital applications, troubleshooting access issues, and providing basic technology guidance.
