Canadian Health Infoway

Executive Summary: November 2020

In 2019, Canada Health Infoway engaged Environics Research to undertake a national consultation with Canadians about their needs, expectations and concerns about the future of their health system, as well as the role of technology in the delivery of better health care. The initiative, called https://www.infoway-inforoute.ca/fr/un-sain-dialogue, was one of the largest public consultations about digital health ever conducted in Canada, reaching more than 58,000 Canadians.

2020 National Survey of Canadian Nurses: Use of Digital Health Technology in Practice

The National Survey of Canadian Nurses constitutes a series of surveys on the use and the impact of digital health technologies on nursing practice commissioned by Canada Health Infoway (Infoway) in partnership with the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) and the Canadian Nursing Informatics Association (CNIA). This report yields the main results of the third iteration of the survey conducted by Leger through an online questionnaire between January 20 to March 29, 2020 on a sample of 1,642 nurses across Canada, 1,132 of whom are providing direct patient care. These nurses were contacted and recruited through invitation emails using four main channels: AQIISTI Infolettre, CNA newsletter, CNIA Newsblast and Leger’s online panel. The sample was weighted by 2018 CIHI workforce data to make it representative of the Canadian nursing population. In addition, ethics approval was obtained prior to starting the survey.

Discharge Communication Practices and Healthcare Provider and Patient Preferences, Satisfaction and Comprehension: A Systematic Review

Anna Barker, Edward Ritchie, Harry Gibbs, Harvey Newnham, Karen Hitchcock, Sara Holton

International Journal for Quality in Health Care, 2017, 29(6), 752–768

Abstract

Purpose: To systematically review the available evidence about hospital discharge communication practices and identify which practices were preferred by patients and healthcare providers, improved patient and provider satisfaction, and increased patients’ understanding of their medical condition.

Data sources: OVID Medline, Web of Science, ProQuest, PubMed and CINAHL plus.Study selection: Databases were searched for peer-reviewed, English-language papers, published to August 2016, of empirical research using quantitative or qualitative methods. Reference lists in the papers meeting inclusion criteria were searched to identify further papers.

Data extraction: Of the 3489 articles identified, 30 met inclusion criteria and were reviewed

Results of data synthesis: Much research to date has focused on the use of printed material and person-based discharge communication methods including verbal instructions (either in person or via telephone calls). Several studies have examined the use of information technology (IT) such as computer-generated and video-based discharge communication practices. Utilizing technology to deliver discharge information is preferred by healthcare providers and patients, and improves patients’ understanding of their medical condition and discharge instructions.

Conclusion: Well-designed IT solutions may improve communication, coordination and retention of information, and lead to improved outcomes for patients, their families, caregivers and primary healthcare providers as well as expediting the task for hospital staff.

HealthHub Rolls Out List of Resources to Help Hospital Patients Manage in Isolation

April 20, 2020 – Last week, HealthHub added a list of patient resources to its website that patients can access directly at their bedside through myHealthHub or their own device.

This list of resources features online activities, brain games and virtual experiences for both adults and children.

HealthHub introduced this feature in response to COVID-19 isolation and physical distancing measures, which are leaving many hospital patients facing heightened feelings of loneliness, boredom and fear.

“For many patients, the hospital has become a lonely place. With visitors restricted and physical distancing measures in effect, we wanted to do something quickly that would help hospital patients pass the time and stay engaged,” said HealthHub’s Chief Customer Officer, Paul Hemburrow. “Right now, we’re focused on responding to emerging and evolving challenges that are putting additional pressure on both hospital patients and healthcare workers.”

Over the coming weeks, HealthHub will be rolling out several more apps and features to continue to respond to the needs of patients, their families and healthcare providers during this difficult time.

Electronic Meal Ordering Systems

Andrew Georgiou, Johanna Westbrook, Julie Li, Ling Li, Mirela Prgomet

Electronic meal ordering systems: an Evidence Check rapid review brokered by the Sax Institute for the NSW Ministry of Health, 2015.

In 2014, HealthShare NSW commenced the development of a new delivery model for patient food services. A set of nutrition standards for menus and specifications for therapeutic diets was developed by the Agency for Clinical Innovation (ACI) to facilitate centralised menu planning and food production. These standards form part of a broader framework to improve nutritional care in NSW hospitals, including reform to the current paper-based meal ordering system with implementation of electronic meal ordering. The electronic meal ordering system is expected to produce multiple benefits for organisations and patients.

A request was made by the Workforce Planning and Development Branch, at the NSW Ministry of Health, to undertake a literature scan to identify and summarise current evidence regarding electronic meal ordering systems in order to inform the planning and evaluation of the NSW meal ordering system reforms. This report presents findings from an evidence scan of literature, from Australia and internationally, on electronic meal ordering system reforms and their associated impacts on hospital and patient outcomes. The period of the review spanned 15 years, from January 2000 to December 2015.

The objectives addressed by the review were to:

  • Describe the types of electronic meal ordering systems and food service reforms related to the introduction of electronic meal ordering systems that have been reported in the literature
  • Describe any nutritional screening and risk assessment protocols implemented alongside electronic meal ordering systems
  • Present evidence of the impact of electronic meal ordering systems on patient outcomes and on implications for staff, and
  • Discuss considerations for future evaluations of electronic meal ordering systems based on the evidence identified in the literature.
